Emily, 11, from Hackney Wick said that she saw the race last year and wanted to take part this time because “it looked like fun”.

Mum Rachel said that the family decided to run together because it was “a good opportunity to get the kids involved in running” while raising funds for a good cause.

The Literacy Trust is a UK charity that helps kids get into reading. It works closely with schools in Hackney, including De Beauvoir Primary where it has previously sent authors in to talk to classes.

A number of teachers donned the Wally outfits to give the kids a run for their money.

Lisa Whittle and Sharon Lynch from St William of York Primary school, Forest Hill, walked around the race and have raised around £400 so far.

“We do a lot of work with the Literacy Trust and being in education, it’s really really important that we promote reading and a love of books in children and young people,” Ms Lynch said.
